With an aim of enhancing the milk production of the state by promotion of dairy husbandry, BAIF made an entry in Jharkhand on 2nd October 2005 i.e. on the birth anniversary of father of nation Mahatma Gandhi. BAIF started its operation in Jharkhand in 2005 and for effective execution & implementation of programme registered a society in Jharkhand in year 2007 named BAIF Institute For Rural Vocations and Advancement (BIRVA).

BAIF in other states is also working through its associate organization. BIRVA in Jharkhand started Dairy Cattle Development Programme under the sponsorship of Directorate of Dairy Development, Department of Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, Government of Jharkhand with an aim that dairy farming is a reliable source of livelihood for small and marginal farmers, who are unable to earn their livelihood from agriculture.

In Jharkhand it is found that cows and buffaloes are maintained by all sections of the community but the average milk yield is too less due to poor quality animals resulting from severe genetic erosion, poor health care and acute shortage of feed. The lack of adequate nutrition and health cover support besides improvement of breed were needed to enhance their productivity.

Dairy husbandry has potential to provide food and nutritional security. The approach is to breed low yielding, nondescript cattle and buffaloes with genetically superior exotic or improved Indian breeds while ensuring genetic improvement of elite native breeds.

The objective of BAIF Dairy Cattle Development Programme is:

To provide gainful self employment to the rural poor through dairy husbandry and livestock development

To create awareness among farmers specially weaker section about the socio economic benefits of improving the local cattle and buffaloes

Production of improved cattle and buffaloes from the local non descript low productive animals

Generation of income for economically backward rural families through milk production

The objective of BIRVA is to increase the milk production of the state. Per capita milk availability per day in Jharkhand is 159 gram where as India figure is 235 gram. BIRVA is continuously taking efforts & initiatives to reach a respectable figure in terms of milk production in the state.

BIRVA is committed for promotion of dairy husbandry in the state and providing an opportunity for rural poor in Jharkhand to become self reliant, self employed through dairy husbandry. Dairy Development Activities of BIRVA in Jharkhand is catering two important aspects viz. contribution in economic growth of the state through milk production and providing sustainable livelihood opportunities to the people of the state through dairy husbandry. BIRVA is committed for sustainable & socio- economic development of Jharkhand.
