Under the sponsorship of Directorate of Dairy Development (Department of AH & Fisheries) Govt. of Jharkhand, BIRVA started Dairy Cattle Development Programme in Jharkhand. The approach was to produce improved cattle and buffaloes from the breed of low yielding, nondescript cattle and buffaloes with use of semen of high pedigree bulls through artificial insemination (AI). The project aimed at enhancing the income level of rural poor by providing gainful self employment opportunities through dairy husbandry and livestock development.

BIRVA started its operation with opening of Dairy Cattle Development Center (DCDC). In other word DCDC can be termed as service providing center for the service seekers i.e. farmers. From these centers, services are provided at the doorsteps of the farmers by center in-charge i.e. trained Para Veterinarian. Department of AH & Fisheries, Govt. of Jharkhand sanctioned the project to BIRVA in six different phases. Initially in Phase I, BIRVA implemented the project in 12 districts of Jharkhand with its 55 DCDC. Looking at the success of the project and keen interest of the farmers in dairy husbandry, GOJ & BIRVA realized for expansion of the project in all the 24 districts of Jharkhand so that more & more farmers could take the benefits of the project and become self – reliant, self-employed through dairy husbandry. From the journey of 55 centers, today BIRVA is providing service to the farmers in all the 24 districts of Jharkhand through its 1010 DCDC.

Under this project, mainly three types of services are provided to the farmers through operational DCDC in the districts:

  1. Artificial Insemination: Trained Para Veterinarian i.e. Center in-Charge (I/C) of the concerned center on call form farmers immediately takes action for doing AI to the cows & buffaloes that has come into heat. Center in-Charge provides AI services at the doorsteps of the farmers.

  2. Pregnancy Diagnosis: This is a follow up service provided by I/C after a period of 2-3 months from AI performed to find out whether the cows & buffaloes have conceived or not. If pregnancy is not confirmed than Center in-Charge re-inseminates that particular cows & buffaloes in next heat.

  3. Calving: It is a verification process done by I/C to find out the result of pregnancy. In other word it can also be termed as regular follow up by I/C to reduce the complication during pregnancy period & up to delivery of new born. The newly born calf is termed as BAIF Progeny.

Exposure Visit, Calf Rally, Gokul Mitra Training and programme on development of model farmers are extension activities which are executed under breed improvement programme.
