‘Goat is poor man’s cow’ – the term coined by Mahatma Gandhi, in India and is a very suitable livelihood option for small and marginal farmers in dry land farming system. Goat is the best alternative domestic pet for income generation where marginal or undulating lands unsuitable for other types of animals like cow or buffalo. Goat farming requires low investments and with proper awareness on goat rearing, it can be made in to a profitable venture for small and marginal farmers.

Goats farming adoption can be supported by the following reasons.

  • Low capital investment and quick return.

  • Small and simple shed is adequate for goat shelter.

  • High prolific breeding rate.

  • Round the year turnover.

  • Demand for goat meat.

  • Easily encashable anytime to meet out contingency expenses

Poultry Farming

Poultry is an important species for livelihood promotion of disadvantaged section of the society. Poultry birds are reared by almost all small, marginal and even landless farmers of the state Jharkhand. Rearing backyard poultry does not require any extra care in form of labour and technology. It may be sold at any time when rural people require money and that’s why it is called debit card or ATM for rural people. Poultry is very familiar and there is very much involvement of women and children in rearing poultry
